Abstract
Concussions can be a complicated injury for an athlete to sustain as they are invisible to the onlooker. Often, athletes who are already experiencing some kind of underlying psychological issue tend to have poorer recovery outcomes. Not only can preexisting psychological conditions worsen concussion recovery, but the recommended rest protocol can also be debilitating for athletes as it removes them from their main sources of social support. Because mental health is a large component of a successful recovery, athletic departments must begin incorporating psychological assessments and support for athletes during their concussion recovery process. Further, education on the risks and symptoms of a concussion must be given more attention as it can encourage greater understanding from teammates and coaches in the recovery process.
