Abstract
Two members of the Black Student Organization (BSO) stand at the podium during a banquet on campus. Emmet Deans is speaking and Tom Seaver stands behind him. College president Weimer K. Hicks sits to the right of the podium. Members of the BSO sent a set of demands to the campus administration during the spring of 1969, including demands related to admissions and a Black Studies program.
According to the "Demands Must Be Met" headline in the May 30, 1969 issue of The Index, "The demands originally presented to the administration of Kalamazoo College by the Black Student Organization on Monday, May 12 prompted a lengthy administration reply on Thursday, May 15. The BSO rejected the answer to the demands as inadequate and expressed this feeling during the Mother's Day Banquet in Welles Hall on Saturday, May 17."
According to Melvin McWilliams '72, other members of the BSO stood along the walls of the banquet room but are not pictured. The speech was referred to as "The Fire Next Time" speech in reference to James Baldwin.
