Abstract

I attempted to explore and answer the following questions during my ten weeks at Upjohn 1.) What is a translator? 2.) What does a translator do? 3.) How does he or she go about it? The intention of this paper is not, therefore, to give a personal account of the time I spent at Upjohn nor to discuss the aims and goals of the Upjohn Company, but rather to answer the above three questions. Due to the confidentiality of the material I worked with, the Upjohn Company has asked me not to discuss in detail or cite any unpublished texts. For this reason, I had to limit the number of examples of translations I used in this discussion to those which were found in previously published medical journals.
