Abstract
The literature on children's musical play is reviewed in light of Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories on learning. The perspectives of children as independently driven learners and as participants within a structured environment that nurtures their developing abilities are used as a guide in analyzing the literature. When engaging in musical play, preschool children are exploring and experimenting with sound. They learn that their actions have effects on the things around them and to associate certain sounds with an object. Progressively, they are able to plan out their actions and their exploration becomes more deliberate. A combination of musical free play and guided instruction results in the most diverse and enriching musical experiences.
