The 1947 Bach Festival was the first iteration of the long-running concert, and was performed February 27, March 1, and March 4. The solo artists were Yella Pessl, Arthur B. Jennings, Harold Haugh, Lilian Knowles, Leonard Treash, and Nelson Leonard. It was directed by Henry Overley. The feature piece was "The Passion According to St. Matthew."
