Abstract
The motion picture industry in the United States both reflects and influences American culture. Since their invention, motion pictures house been one of the most popular form of entertainment in the United States. Before the advent of television, movies were the most favored media form. During this era films were produced to appeal too large multi-generational and economic majority of the American population; therefore, the movies of this time period both reflect and perpetuate the cultural and political viewpoints of this majority. The power of the motion picture industry to reflect social trends did not end with the rise of television; rather o new, different era began. The author traces the social changes that occurred in America from the fifties through the nineties as seen in a sample of the most popular movies of the period: The Robe, Spartacus, Auntie Mame, Guys and Dolls, Mary Poppins, The Graduate, Love Story, Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, and Top Gun.
