Are National Hockey League Players Being Paid According to their Productivity? An Empirical Study of National Hockey League Players from 2013-2015
Marsh, Nicholas A.
This paper seeks to address the following questions. First, are NHL players being paid based on their productivity? Second, which statistics are relevant to determining a player's salary? Through analysis of 1,325 hockey players over the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, this study found that goals actually do not have a large impact on determining a player's salary. It is also found that age is one of the primary factors in determining a player's salary. Therefore, it can be inferred that a player's salary is determined almost as much by physical characteristics as it is productivity on the ice.
