Abstract
This project began as an attempt to recapture some of my study abroad memories that I had blocked out because of the painful events that happened to me shortly before returning to the United States from Mexico. As the project progressed, it turned into a self-examination touching on my genuine feelings regarding family, loneliness, friends and yes, even sex. I feel that the poems follow trends in theme and tone according to the style of the authors I was reading at the time. Poems such as Blink, which have a slower, ponderous tone, were inspired by Conrad Hilberry while poems like Late Day Fantasy, Homewrecker, and Night Dream at Noon which have a sexy, grab-you-by-your-gums attitude arise from reading Sandra Cisneros. Other authors I read during the project include Raymond Carver, Ernest Hemmingway, and Diane Seuss. Their voices are not particularly heard in any specific poems but can be subtly noticed throughout.
