Critical thinking and complex problem solving are two of the most important skills employers are looking for, and a strong foundation in both allows students to excel in the workforce. These skills are taught through active learning, a style of learning that requires hands-on engagement with students. A K-12 curriculum that teaches complex problem solving and critical thinking skills would require subjects that contain high levels of active learning, such as computer science. Computer Science is almost entirely hands-on learning, with students grappling with concepts relating to logic structures, algorithms, and of course coding. These three teaching concepts in computer science require and develop critical thinking and complex problem solving skills. K-12 curriculum should include an earlier and more thorough engagement with computer science to teach students critical thinking and complex problem solving at an early age.
