Abstract
In the past, child life programs have been used to help patients cope with the stress and strains of hospitalization. Throughout my research I set out to discover just how important such programs are. Over the course of 2 months, I collected qualitative data, in the form of field notes and interviews at the child life program at Georgetown University Hospital. I also researched relative topics pertaining to child life programs including therapeutic play, distraction methods, anxiety and stress, and child development. My observations allowed me to witness the effectiveness of therapeutic play, child development, and distraction methods. When working with children, it is important to use developmentally appropriate techniques if one wishes to alleviate the stress caused by hospitalization.
