Abstract

The study of literature is the study of the words which have been passed on from generation to generation. In a sense, it is the most truthful history a / student can study because the cardinal virtue of literature is honesty. In an effort to discern the truth imbedded in poetry, novels, and plays, the academic study of literature is the manner in which a student comes to understand what has been there before her, the genius which produced the works past times have been marked by. Erected in 1954, the University of Nairobi was the first public institution of higher learning established in Kenya. In turn, it is regarded as one of the most prestigious colleges on the continent of Africa. The Department of Literature at the University of Nairobi is responsible for two-thirds of all literature professors in Kenya (May 14). Renowned authors such as Ngugi wa Thiongo, Micere Mugo, and John Ruganda once taught in the deparlment. The department was the first of its kind to recognize the importance of including African Literature, as opposed to Colonial Literature only, in an African University's syllabus. Essentially, the department's name proceeds itself. Furthermore, it is an extremely qualified case study to understand the nature by which literature is taught in Kenya.
