Abstract
Through this SIP I intend to explain thoroughly and provide a view of the world pertaining to mutual funds. I will name the advantages and disadvantages of investing in mutual funds. I will discuss the differences between open-end and closed-end funds, and list the various types of funds under both categories, explaining of what each fund consists. Next, I shall give information on what an investor should look for in choosing the right fund. In "Choosing the Right Fund" I intend to list and explain some statistical and other means by which to measure funds. I will review expenses associated with funds, and the taxability of a fund. Then I will present the argument of whether or not investor should place their assets into a family of funds, or simply invest the funds they choose. Investors occasionally question the need of a broker, so I will list the pros and cons of having one, including discussion of no-load funds. Furthermore, I will discuss the factors of risk involved when investing in funds and present model portfolios for different lifestyles and life goals. Finally, I will finish with my conclusion to the first half of my paper. In the second half of my paper I will explain how my WESIP at American Express Financial Advisors has given me valuable experience and created new, opportunities to pursue. A history of the company will be given along with an overview, in order to explain the workings of the company. Then I will write on Mr. Mclaughlin, the financial advisor under whom I worked. I will follow with the experiences that proved the most interesting throughout the internship and how they will aid myself. I will finish this section and the paper with how I feel my accomplishments have given me an edge upon graduation, as compared to my competition.
