Abstract
This study addresses the portrayal of females in fantasy novels written for adolescents. Nine popular fantasy novels published after the year 2000 are examined. The study focused particularly on the portrayal of the main characters' romantic relationships. The relationships are analyzed in the context of physically and emotionally absent parents, controlling males, unpleasant encounters, dependent females, and emotional problems. Findings suggest a reoccurring patriarchal theme in the novels. Specifically, romantic relationships are often substitutes of physically or emotionally absent parents. The males in the relationships are frequently controlling. The relationships are often started on unpleasant or antagonistic encounters. The females are frequently very dependent on the males. Finally, problems in the relationship commonly result in the development of emotional disturbances in the females.
