Abstract
The effects of alcohol on the fetus are well known, but these effects in conjunction with specific diets have not been studied well. Because one effect of alcohol is the fluidization of biological membranes, and the source of membrane fatty acids is the diet, the diet of the experimental animals was varied between High Unsaturated Fat (HUSF), High Saturated Fat (HSF), and AIN-76 (Control). in conjunction with different doses of alcohol, High Dose (5 g EtOH/kg· day), Low Dose (3 g EtOH/kg. day), Zero Dose (0 g EtOH/ kg • day), and Untreated, no administration. Pair feeding and alcohol administration began on Gestational Day (GD) 8 and continued through GD 20. This resulted in the discovery that a high fat diet. regardless of saturation, increases the females ability to give birth. Also. alcohol reduces the females ability to give birth. A moderate dose of alcohol (3 g EtOH/kg • day) did not seem to effect any changes between diet groups. More study is necessary to completely elucidate all of the effects.
