The Production of Polarized Deuterium Through Optical Pumping
During the period from September 1989 until December 1989, I participated in a program called the Science and Engineering Research Semester at Argonne National Laboratory. It is a government sponsored program for undergraduate juniors and seniors that gives participants the opportunity to share in research at federally sponsored labs. I was placed into a project under the jurisdiction of the Medium Energy Physics Department. This experiment had two goals: To produced the world's densest source of polarized deuterium, and with it to determine certain characteristics of deuterium when being bombarded by electrons. It was a cooperative venture being performed both in the USSR and at Argonne. I spent all my time working on the set-up and data retrieval end of things. In the following pages, I will attempt to outline both the nature and the progress of the experiment.
