Abstract
Community service and Community Service Learning, or CSL, are researched and analyzed closely in a qualitative study. This qualitative study took place at an International Baccalaureate Organization school in Spain. It involved seven tenth grade students and it followed their emotional, behavioral, and cognitive progress throughout three months of working as a mentor in a reading program with third graders. Conclusions are made about each student and overall the qualitative study showed promising results in terms of self-esteem, well-being, and connection to a larger community for community service and CSL in the classroom. More research, especially in international schools, must take place to get a fuller understanding of community service and CSL.
