Abstract
The focus of this literature review and proposed study is for the treatment of alcohol abuse and dependence in the context of treatment for alcohol addictions and other addictions (e.g. cocaine and heroin) and the different barriers to recovery (e.g. help-seeking behavior, insurance and program requirements), the effects of social support and the issues of relapse. Several types of treatment (e.g. twelve step programs, Community Reinforcement Approach and Network Support Treatment) and social support have been shown to have a positive effect on the overall recovery from the addiction. The proposed efficacy study for alcohol addictions treatment with the examination of the differences between traditional outpatient therapies (OPT) and the same therapy sessions with the stay in a halfway house (HWH) and both of these continued with participation in the Friends and Family Program (FFP) at Brighton Hospital. The differences between the four treatment groups are to be examined during the course of a 4-week treatment session and then evaluated at a one-year follow up interview. It is hypothesized that the HWH group combined with FFP will result in the best treatment outcomes. Other groups will be studied as a control in order to evaluate each components importance, these control groups were OPT alone, OPT with FFP, and HWH alone.
