Abstract
Online cognitive behavioral therapy has been recently developed to help cut costs of treating depression, make treatment widespread, and provide another alternative to treating depression. Research confirms that online CBT can effectively help treat depression and is further aided by the assistance of a therapist. This proposed study includes 150 college aged males and females that compares the effects of an online CBT program when combined with webcam chats with therapists, instant messaging chats with therapists minus vision, and finally treatment as usual. Participants completed Beck Depression Inventory-11, Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire, Behavioral Activation for Depression Scales, and Quality of Life Scales before and after treatment. The proposed study proposes that the rate at which webcam discussion based groups will be significantly faster than that of the instant messaging and control groups. It is also hypothesized that observed treatment effects found in each group though most significantly in the webcam and instant messaging groups. Participants in the webcam group should experience longer lasting treatment effects and have a quicker recovery rate. Lastly, it is proposed that participants in the webcam discussion based group and instant messaging group will retain the highest number of participants due to factors of anonymity and convenience.
