My research project was an outgrowth of my ongoing interest in local history, specifically that of my hometown of Grand Rapids, and a more recent interest which developed from Dr. Barclay's junior seminar on the Cold War. After several discussions of Cold War culture in America I became curious as to the effect of this event on my hometown. I have attempted to take the local experience of Grand Rapids and tie it into the larger schema of the Cold War and world events. Hopefully this study will give a new perspective on the history of Grand Rapids, and perhaps it can help illuminate the experience of other Midwest cities during the same time period.en_US
