Abstract
Experiencing abuse or neglect from a primary caregiver can hinder the attachment relationship between a child and his or her parent. Having an insecure attachment style to a parental figure can have negative effects on later social development. The contrast in attachment styles between children reared in homes versus children reared in institutions, such as orphanages, is very strong. Orphanages and other institutions provide shelter and care for children and youth, and the caregivers become the momentary attachment figures. It is important for institutions to provide a space of inclusion and emotional security to foster children's social skills. Caregivers at orphanage Hogar Miguel Magone in Guatemala answered questions regarding their experiences working with the children and youth. This paper presents a review of attachment theory, the implications of poor early experiences on children's emotional and behavioral development, and two intervention programs aimed for caregivers of at-risk children. The answers of the caregivers were used to propose a program to implement at Hogar Miguel Magone to improve the communication with the children and foster the involvement of the parents with the orphanage.
