Abstract
Stroke is often accompanied by post-stroke psychological disorders. Frequently studied post-stroke psychological disorders are depression, anxiety, mania, and emotional lability. Research has focused on whether these psychological disorders are the patient's reaction to stroke impairment or whether they are the direct result of stroke-induced brain damage. Studies of location of brain damage have correlated left hemispheric damage with depression and emotional lability. Right hemispheric damage correlates with post-stroke anxiety disorders and mania. No clear conclusion can be drawn about whether post-stroke psychological disorders are the result of brain damage. Regardless of origin, post-stroke psychological disorders interfere with patient rehabilitation. Clinical observations of these disorders and their effects are offered.
