Abstract
In October of 1933, the college celebrated its centennial with a convocation, reunions, a historical pageant, and other events. According to the centennial program, the historical pageant β€œis designed to portray varying phases of the life of the College during the past century.” This image shows two women sitting on the campus quadrangle in front of a teepee, presumably preparing to represent the period from 1833 to 1843. One woman wears a headband, braided hair, and has a blanket with Native American designs wrapped around her shoulders. She powders her nose in a practice known as redface – the act of applying red-based make-up to achieve the appearance of an Indigenous person – while the other woman assists with her make-up. The hairstyle, accessories, and the teepee reflect stereotypical images commonly attached to Indigenous people.
