Abstract
In October of 1933, the college celebrated its centennial with a convocation, reunions, a historical pageant, and other events. According to the centennial program, the historical pageant βis designed to portray varying phases of the life of the College during the past century.β This image shows two women sitting on the campus quadrangle in front of a teepee, presumably preparing to represent the period from 1833 to 1843. One woman wears a headband, braided hair, and has a blanket with Native American designs wrapped around her shoulders. She powders her nose in a practice known as redface β the act of applying red-based make-up to achieve the appearance of an Indigenous person β while the other woman assists with her make-up. The hairstyle, accessories, and the teepee reflect stereotypical images commonly attached to Indigenous people.
