This study is an attempt to analyze certain factors which are of major importance in the determination of profits in the paper industry in the United States. The three primary determinants of profits are, of course, prices, costs, and physical volume. All other factors affect profits through their influence on one or more of these primary determinants. Four factors have been selected for analysis in this study: 1. The relationship between production and capacity 2. Competition 3. Research and development 4. Foreign markets. These factors were selected, after extensive research, on the basis of the influence that they have exerted or will exert on the industry's profits.en_US
