Abstract
The research includes an investigation of the effects of severe chronic illness in childhood and adolescence upon psychosocial development and mental health. Specifically, contemporary patterns of chronic illness, psychological issues surrounding chronic illness, the role of the family of a chronically ill child, and the experience of hospitalization are discussed. Although children and adolescents with a chronic illness face considerable problems and psychological stressors, normal functioning and development are possible with intervention in the above mentioned areas. A case study and suggestions for future research are included.
