Abstract
Berger interested me primarily because of the emphasis he places on a broadening of the sociological scope in terms of a philosophic orientation. The "humanistic approach" taken in Invitation to Sociology appeared to me to be what I had been missing in the study of this field. I must at the outset confess a bias which I possess toward sociology: as does Berger, I feel that the social sciences have become too empirically oriented at the expense of theoretical, philosophical, or humanistic understanding. I had become somewhat disillusioned with sociology for this reason and, in my state of confusion and dissatisfaction, was searching for an alternative approach. This approach (not to degrade the empirical in any way whatsoever) I found in the writings of Peter L. Berger.
With honors.
