Abstract
The border that divides the United States and Mexico has had a long and complicated history. U.S. Immigration law is even more complex and confusing as to how it works. As a country that prides itself on being a country built by immigrants, the United States’ Immigration policies and procedures require some serious re-evaluation. In order to re-evaluate the system, it is important to seek a deeper understanding of the issue at hand and how immigrant lives have become a political debate in the United States of America. This ‘political debate’ had led us to policies that don’t seem quite logical, violate human rights’ laws, and treat human lives as disposable. For as far back as history dates America, immigrants of all legal statuses have helped build this nation and establish the American Dream. People do not choose to come to the United States to be ‘unproductive’. The whole purpose of leaving everything behind at home and reestablishing in a new place is to seek better opportunity, to seek safety, and to work hard for the American Dream. Unfortunately, in recent years under the Trump administration officials have relentlessly dehumanized migrants who come to the Southern U.S. border to seek aid and support from one of the (supposedly) leading countries of the world. The new policies under this administration have cost the nation billions upon billions of dollars. Such polices have done nothing but ignore the U.S.’s duty as a wealthy and developed nation and put so many precious lives at risk. In the most recent news, we can clearly see how since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, there has been a brighter light shed on the inequalities and inhuman practices of ICE. However, these injustices are nothing new. They have been there and have been overlooked by right-wing, capitalists for far too long. It is about time begin to dissect the economic and moral effects of this issue side by side.
