A marriage between poetry and music: A Literary Analysis of Romances Without Words by Paul Verliane and Ariettes Oubliees by Claude Debussy
Abstract
The main part of this project is a recital in which I will sing in French, German, Italian and English. For songs in French I am going to sing the Ariettes Oubliees which consists of six poems by Paul Verlaine from his collection, Romances without words, set to music composed by Claude Debussy. The second part is a series of text explanations that will explore the six poems with the aim of explaining the emotions that Verlaine evokes. The six poems are: C'est l'extase; il pleure dans mon coeur; L'ombre des arbres; Paysages Belges: Chevaux de bois; Aquarelles No. I. Green; et Aquarelles No. II. Spleen. The aim of this project is to obtain a better understanding of poems in general and a better interpretation during the recital.
