Abstract
This paper covers all material in the first two-thirds of the year-long course in basic complex variables taught by Dr. Stoll at the University of Notre Dame. It was wrltten from
two sets of lecture notes: one set written in 1966, the other, 1970.
It is essential that ther eader have a thorough background in real analysis, especially multivariable calculus, some modern algebra, and point set topology. In addition, it would be desirable to have some knowledge of differential geometry,
homology theory, and homotopy theory. The ideas from these areas are covered in the text and appendices. The Riemann-Stieltjes concept of integration is used
throughout the paper.
