Abstract
The "Self" is a spectral image within the discipline of psychology. For years it was a convenient scapegoat and was blamed for many of the uncategorized malfunctions of an individual's personality. Today, the Self is coming into its own and
the ephemeral ghost is becoming more corporeal. This new, tangible Self is reacting
to the previous abuse received from early psychologists and is now helping to explain
some of the unsolved mysteries of the psyche. It is the aim of this paper to
credit this maligned poltergeist by explaining its vital importance to the individual.
