Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of two collegiate athletic captains to highlight major characteristics of athletic leadership in hopes to further enhance athletic leadership programs. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to examine the experience of the two collegiate athletes retrospectively, in which participants recalled experiences in both high school and college. Interviews were formatted to recall experiences about concepts of leadership, their views on high school and college leadership , coaches, self-concept of leadership, becoming a better leader teammates, and to provide opinion of sport leadership programs and life skills. Results may show that leadership programs should be developed for high school athletes and that programs should possibly account for gender differences in athletes. Results also show that experience is essential to provide athletes with self-confidence and self-learned knowledge to become a successful leader.
