Abstract
The author writes, “Stories and imagination are vital aspects of many people’s lives, which is why using these tools to compose an effective fantasy story is so important. The world needs fantasy, especially fantasy that seems almost plausible for the real world, either as a reminder of or a distraction from reality. One of Them can accomplish just that. …..Dr. Seuss once said that ‘fantasy is … a way at looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope.’ This can be applied to the genre of fantasy is that it is usually a perversion of real life: most, if not all, fantasies include humans, but this is often the only semblance to life as we know it. One of Them is, therefore, a sort of perversion of fantasy: the characters experience real things like school while also dealing with supernatural discoveries and threats. This aspect of my writing is probably influenced by authors like Stephenie Meyer, Maggie Stiefvater, and Pittacus Lore (the pseudonym for the authors of the I Am Number Four series). What sets One of Them apart, however, is the fact that trust and mistrust are major themes; usually, characters in fantasy just go along with the new things that are happening to them, but my character, Robert, is very skeptical. Readers will wonder who to trust along with him.”
