Abstract
The current study wished to determine when environmental regulation of the siphon-withdrawal response (SWR) appears during the juvenile and early adult development of the Aplysia californica. 65 Aplysia californica sea hares in early and late Stage 12 of juvenile development and Stage 13, the first stage of adulthood, were exposed to three conditions: a control condition where they were not exposed to environmental turbulence, a brief turbulence condition where they were exposed to I 0 s of turbulence, and a long turbulence condition where they were exposed to 10 min of turbulence. Animals were stimulated using a water jet emitted from a micro-pipet. Data were timed and recorded. Environmental regulation of SWR was found to not exist prior to Stage 13 in the brief turbulence condition. No significant findings were identified for either the control or long turbulence conditions. This indicated that environmental regulation appears relatively late during the development of the Aplysia.
