Abstract
My personal viewpoint on the student teaching experience is that
learning by doing is the best thing for up-and-coming teachers. I learned more
about teaching during my weeks at West Point Middle School than any book or
professor could ever try to teach me. I am a hands-on kind of learner, but the
learning does not stop once I've got experience in my hand. The process of
learning is continuous. I can say that even though they can be extremely
frustrating, I learned a great deal about teaching through each of the lesson
presentations. As I taught the lessons a second or third time during the course
of student teaching, I became more comfortable with the lessons and what I
was teaching. I learned what to do and what not to do, so that during the next
lesson I would not make the same mistakes or would use what worked well in
the first lessons again. I must admit, with no offense, that college courses
and books can only teach a certain amount of necessary information. As an
amateur teacher, I can say that I knew nothing about the actual art of teaching
when I went to student teach, but left West Point Middle School with a better
understanding of what it means to be a teacher.
