Abstract

Fibril Size Decreases: •With disease – Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) insufficiency in dogs (Zachos, et al. 2002). •After exposure of rabbit medial collateral ligaments (MCL) to bacterial collagenase (Cunningham, et al. 1997). • In scar tissue formed after surgery in conjunction with type III collagen production (Shino, et al. 1995). Purpose •The purpose of this study was to determine if collagen fibril (Fig. 1) morphology (size, density) changes when tendons are deprived of stress. Stress Deprived Tendons: •Have increased collagenase (MMP-1) production that correlates to decrease in strength and stiffness (Arnoczky, et al. 2003 and Lavagnino, et al. 2003 ). Hypothesis •We hypothesized that collagen fibril diameter would decrease in stress deprived tendons, and that this would correlate to a decrease in stiffness of the tendons
