Abstract
A knowledge of the means of transmission between neuronal units and the way in which nerves affect their effector organs is important to understanding the functioning of the nervous system. This paper seeks to explain the method of synaptic transmission encountered among the vertebrates, of which man is of course a member. To be sure, this paper does not explore all the effects of chemical, synaptic transmission exhaustively. It does, however, provide a general statement of the knowledge which has been acquired in this field and may thus serve as a launching point for further research.
