Abstract

The stock market is essential for most individuals who are trying to make their own money grow over time. However, many studies reveal that African-Americans have long been underrepresented in the stock market. The author describes working at a brokerage firm to learn more about the stock market in order to make African Americans more knowledgeable about investing. The author evaluates why African-Americans are underrepresented in the stock market and analyzes what is actually being done to increase the number of African-American investors. First he explains what the stock market is and the role it plays in our society. The author discusses statistics pertaining to African-American investors and shows the dramatic progress in recent years. Despite the many barriers, African-Americans are willing to learn about investing.
