Abstract

During the Fall quarter of 1996, I held an intern position at the Kalamazoo College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located at the L. Lee Stryker Center on the campus of Kalamazoo College. The SBDC is a branch of the Michigan SBDC located in Detroit. The Michigan SBDC operates under a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBDC's purpose is to offer free confidential counseling to the community-at-large for anyone who owns or is wishing to start up a small business. The Kalamazoo College SBDC is the Regional Center for Region 11 in Southwest Michigan, serving the counties of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Cass, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren. A Satellite Center is located at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, and there are Affiliate Centers located in Allegan, Hastings, Battle Creek, Coldwater, South Haven, Dowagiac, Niles, New Buffalo, St. Joseph and Buchanan. The purpose of my internship was to perform research that I needed for the marketing plan portion of my SIP and to gain useful work experience as I prepare to enter the work force. I was a full-time student intern at the SBDC from September 9, 1996, to December 5, 1996. I worked Monday through Friday from 8 AM until4 PM every day. My duties at the SBDC can be categorized as follows: Administrative duties, Student Consultant, conducting of training seminars, financial analysis, and special projects. I feel the skills I gained from this experience were very beneficial towards my future in the business world as they will enable me to compete for jobs as well as help me perform whatever duties I may have at any future position I may hold.
