Abstract
The word "autism"
is derived from the word "autos" meaning "self" which describes the child's main symptom -- withdrawal into himself away from others. Leo Kanner expresses this best in a general definition, "The common denominator in all these patients is a disability to relate themselves in the ordinary way to people and situations
from the beginning of life." To better understand Kanner's statement and to unfold the mysterious world of the autistic child,
have brought together here most of what is known about autism. We
shall first study in depth the varied and strange behavior patterns of
these children. With the aid of Bettelheim (1967) we shall be able to
study a case history of one of these children. Also we shall note
e differences between autism and other childhood disorders. Then we
shall proceed to study causation of autism and look at the controversies
between the biological and psychogenic cases for causation. Finally we shall discuss methods of treatment both group and
and learn about what is known of these children later in life.
