Abstract
I spent this summer teaching performance and creative writing techniques to young
people (age fourteen to eighteen.) Their work centered around the issue of privilege and
great attention was paid to the Cincinnati April 2001 race riots.
This paper focuses on the work that I did, but more importantly it focuses on the
people I worked with and my own issues concerning privilege and race within a social
context. My work this summer gave me valuable insight into my role in society and the
honesty and dedication expressed by the students I worked with was inspiring.
On a personal level, teaching young people is greatly in line with my future career
plans. I hope to continue my work with the ArtWorks program this summer and perhaps
pursue future employment working with youth in the arts.
