Abstract
The turbulent yet transitory events of May 1968 represent a crucial turning point within modem France. The antecedents of the cultural manifestations, known as "les evenements de Mai '68", are clearly visible when one closely examines the political conditions of the Gaullist regime leading up to the events themselves. However, as a political phenomenon within France's expansive "revolutionary" heritage, the tumultuous month of May 1968 remains a complex enigma. The rupture within one of France's most secure Republic was unprecedented in its unforeseen nature, brevity, and curious impact. The stability of the Fifth Republic's constitution was undeniably challenged; curiously. its survival was assured by the self-imposed capitulation of the constitutive leader of the Fifth Republic itself, Charles de Gaulle.
