Abstract
Whistler made a number of etchings of Venetian scenes from about 1880, of which this is one. In the first three states of the plate, a second boy was on the steps; in the fourth states, he was replaced by the cat. Whistler pulled a varying number of impressions of the Venetian subjects was no longer restricted by his agreement with the Fine Art Society, and the publication of "Twenty-Six Etchings" in 1886 by the Messrs. Dowdeswells. Thirty complete sets were published, with 12 extra impressions of 15 subjects to be sold separately. "The Garden" was selected by Whistler for hanging in the Chicago Exposition of 1893. It's plate has been destroyed (Naylor, "Selected Etchings of James A. McN. Whistler").
