Abstract
The observance of the American Bicentennial is an occasion which presented itself during the period of my Senior Independent Project. I decided to explore the organization and activities of this celebration by working on them personally. This entailed working for ten weeks with the Cultural Resources Council, the official Bicentennial coordinating agency for Syracuse and Onondaga County, New York.
The work varied from routine clerical jobs to participating in planning sessions, conferences, and talking with professionals who work on the Bicentennial
on all levels. I saw Bicentennial planning from many angles, worked with many different kinds of people, and learned the strengths and weaknesses
of the Bicentennial structure. This paper, then, is
an attempt to record my varying observances and impressions
of the celebration of our nation's 200th
birthday.
