Abstract
The primary purpose of this paper is to explore the waste minimization and recovery technologies employed in Lacks Enterprises' Airlane facility in order to reduce the hazardous waste it discharges and conserve the chemicals it uses in the production of plated plastics. Lacks Enterprises has encountered a number of pollution problems with its plants in the past. The Airlane plant, one of the leading "state-of-the-art" plating facilities in the world, was built with the intention of not only maximizing profit, but also controlling pollution. This paper begins with a detailed description of the plating line so that the measures taken to minimize waste and recover chemicals can be understood. The chemical waste treatment process is also explained in order to comprehend the procedures required to ultimately dispose of the hazardous waste accumulated during the production of plated plastics. Finally the paper concludes with an economic analysis containing the cost impacts of the measures utilized in the Airlane facility. Basic pollution topics including recycling, solid waste disposal, and legal aspect are also incorporated in this analysis to provide an understanding of the problems associated with externalities such as hazardous wastes.
