Treating Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) By the use of Phytochemicals and Chiropractic Care
In compliance with the graduation requirements for Kalamazoo College, I completed my Senior Individualized Project (SIP) during the summer of2000 at Wamar's Chiropractic Clinic in Imlay City Michigan. During my twelve weeks there, I worked on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. As a Health Science major looking to complete a Doctoral of Chiropractic, I believe my experience was beneficial not only in that it fulfilled the requirements of my SIP, but also offered me a broad perspective of the different aspects of chiropractic that I may want to pursue in the future. In addition to helping with x-rays, massaging, traction, and observing, my main focus for the first two weeks was to come up with a research topic that was both interesting and well cited in scientific literature. One of the patients that particularly caught my eye was eight year old Bobby. Bobby was an adopted child I was familiar with because he was in my mother's class the previous year. Bobby has a fairly common childhood disorder called Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD). His parents shared the same feelings as many parents who have an ADHD child in that they would rather not put their child on drugs to cure this disorder. They opted to listen to me one day after school as I talked to them about what I had learned about chiropractic care to help cure ADHD. The month before I attended a seminar that just touched on the subject but immediately I was interested. Together with Phytochemical supplements and vitamins, chiropractic care could be a natural route of leading Bobby to a better childhood. The idea of curing this disorder without drugs that seem to over medicate the child and turn their emotions off was so fascinating to me that I chose treating ADHD with chiropractic care and Phytochemicals as the subject of my research.
