Abstract
This paper primarily discusses education reform in America both past and present. First, it takes a brief look at the history of American education then looks as how reforms have swung back and forth between liberal and conservative phases over time. These phases have significantly affected the changes made in education throughout the history of this country. Next it examines the purpose of education and how this has changed in sync with the constantly swinging education-philosophy pendulum. Of particular focal interest in this paper is the No Child Left Behind Act of2001 under the George W. Bush Administration. This paper analyses both how this act originated and its implications on the future of American education. Finally,' this paper looks at where American education is headed and what needs to be done to give the strongest nation in the world an educational foundation that truly supports it.
