Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the idea of
equality, specifically political equality in a number of
different contexts. First, its historical foundations, those
directly relevant to the American situation. Second, its
institutionalization into the American political value
structure. And third, a particularly disturbing context, its
being challenged as a means of correcting social injustice.
This paper will attempt to demonstrate the complexity of the
question 'How do we effect social equality and assure social
equity?'
