Abstract

It is clear that the problem of the dropout is multifaceted; economic, social, educational, and political. The problem of unemployment itself is an enormous one. But youth unemployment is today's particular enigma. For these young people are the work force of the future- a future in a complex society, which appears very foreboding for anyone without an education or special training. There is, however, a new urgency awakening in communities throughout the nation to focus on the hitherto forgotten dropout. Society is beginning to realize that hope and help need to be given to the displaced, disoriented young dropouts to return them to the mainstream of our social and economic life. Our own community of Kalamazoo has been one of the pioneers in the search for an effective program to answer this crisis. The program which has been developed to deal with this problem is Youth Opportunities Unlimited. I have endeavored to present in this paper an accurate account of the workings of this organization.
