Abstract
The aim of this experiment was to study the influence of four diets on the growth
rates of first feeding coho larvae (Oncorhynchus kisutch) at a starting mass of 0.34 g.
Over a period of four weeks at 12 ± I°C. triplicate groups of fish were offered four
different diets: 1) live Artemia nauplii, 2) live adult Artemia; 3) Biodiet starter, and 4) dry
Artemia nauplii. Groups of fish were fed either ad libitum or a restricted ration to
determine if differences in growth were due to nutritional content of the diet or to difference
in feed intake. After four weeks, all groups of fish were switched to Biodiet from their
respective live and dry feeds for an additional two week period to determine if any early
benefits in mass gain were sustained wben fish were switched to pelleted dry feed. The
first feeding coho fed adult Artemia ad libitum grew significantly faster than coho fed the
other test diets and this difference in size remained after six weeks of feeding. after
conversion of fish to Biodiet. Thus. adult Artemia are very suitable live feed for first
feeding coho.
