Abstract

The author presents a collection of creative nonfiction exploring the culture of Kalamazoo’s Vine neighborhood. She writes “My hope for those pieces is that the greater Kalamazoo community reads them and is inspired to visit Vine; to attend a house show, pick raspberries in the community garden, or join in on a Slow Roll bike ride. Perhaps news of what's fostering community in Vine will spread and begin to foster community in similar ways in other neighborhoods that might not have community gardens or passionate cycling rights activists. I also want other Vine residents to read these pieces, get further involved in their own community, and to feel a sense of pride in the square mile they live in the way I now do.”
