Abstract

Environmental degradation has become a global problem that can no longer be discredited as a forgone conclusion of business operation. Economies and business communities, now, have to develop in a manner that does not harm future generations, becoming a "green,” or a social and environmental, role model for other business and governments around the world. One new development that has come about recently, after much corporate scandal, is Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR, corporate social responsibility, values not only accounting profits but cultural, ethical, and environmental profits as well. It is doing these things while being socially accountable to the shareholder, community, and the world, a shift in the process not results, only a shift to help development. Sustainability is simply "providing for the needs at present without sacrificing the ability of any future generations to meet their own needs,” from Our Common Future. It is not as simple as it seems with globalization, a new threat to sustainability. Local economies have the ability now to supply the world an emphasis must be placed on sustaining local culture and history so the benefits can truly be gained by poor and underdeveloped people of the world. When all groups in an economy are able to work with a foundation of green ideas, based upon responsibility and sustainability, the tremendously complex and beautiful world that we have will be successful for centuries to come.
